"Geographical indication can be an important indicator of both heritage and quality for many products. It is important that we extend to non-agricultural products the same protections that consumers already enjoy in relation to agricultural products. If a product is associated with a certain region or area then the consumer should be allowed to purchase with the confidence that this is in fact a correct and accurate portrayal. Furthermore, this protects businesses that rely on the production of certain materials that are associated with an area, often drawing on long tradition and practice to provide good quality for those who purchase their goods. I was proud to vote in favour of these common sense protections for both businesses and consumers."@en1
