"I voted in favour of this report because a single system would exploit the positive economic effects of protecting the distinctiveness and quality of such products, providing consumers with reliable information on their place and method of production and helping to combat counterfeiting. Furthermore, extending the scope of the geographical indications (GIs) protection system to cover non-agricultural products could help make the EU’s position on GIs even stronger and more cogent both in bilateral trade negotiations and multilateral forums; the ultimate aim being to provide a high level of protection for all high-quality European products outside the EU. A geographical indication protection system would help European trade and make EU businesses become even more competitive on a global scale."@en1
