"Madam President, the creation of an EU-wide system of protection of geographical indications has already proved its vital importance for many of our agricultural products. Now it is vital that we extend it to include authentic local products. The fact is that we have a fragmented situation where some Member States offer no protection, while others have widely differing definitions. This will mean there is a clear and strong legal framework for protecting our local producers, and that is why today I voted in favour of the extension of the geographical indications to non-agricultural products. My region of the West Midlands houses world-renowned china products, like Wedgewood, Steelite, Royal Worcester and Spode in Stoke-on-Trent. I call on the Commission to take strong measures to make sure that authentic products from the Potteries can no longer be priced out of the market by cheap knock-offs. They are a crucial part of my region’s heritage, and I urge the Commission to ensure they receive proper protection."@en1
