"I supported this report to mobilise the EU Solidarity Fund in response to disasters in Bulgaria and Greece which occurred earlier this year. The fund allows the EU to assist when emergency situations and disasters strike Member States or their regions and to show solidarity with citizens affected. Across Bulgaria severe winter weather conditions damaged public infrastructure as well as private homes and businesses at a cost of €243,305 million which qualifies as a 'major natural disaster' and I welcome that the Commission paid a 10% advance which was used by the Bulgarian authorities for urgent response. Two separate severe flooding incidents in the Thrace and central and western Greece also damaged infrastructure, public buildings, private homes & businesses, impacted farming infrastructure, warehouses and crops and resulted in power failures, the isolation of some mountainous settlements and the destruction of some of Greece’s cultural heritage assets. Combined the two events had an estimated cost of €395,878 million and qualified for the fund under the regional disaster criteria."@en1
