"The principle of subsidiarity dictates that decisions should be taken at the closest possible level to the citizen – in this case at regional or national level. Therefore, these matters should not be funded by the European Union. Administration costs mean that the whole is, in fact, less than the sum of its parts and the amounts of money requested are too small for there to be any macroeconomic justification.
It is absurd that the arbiters of whether this funding should, or should not, be given are Members of the European Parliament with no detailed knowledge of the situation. This project may well be of benefit to the people of Bulgaria and Greece, but I am not best placed to judge.
The EU Solidarity Fund should be scrapped, which would give money back to the Member States to decide for themselves about the appropriateness of such funding. Consequently, I had no option but to vote against – even though this may be a worthwhile project."@en1
