"I welcome the steps endorsed by this report and its sister report which would result in some of the most lethal psychoactive substances – or legal highs – being closer regulated or banned altogether. In my constituency, Northern Ireland, there has been a spate of recent deaths, particularly among young people, caused exclusively by this scourge. Earlier this year, a case brought by Belfast City Council resulted in the conviction of three individuals who had failed to comply with safety regulations in the sale of these substances. While this outcome was sadly too late for many who had paid the ultimate price of the damage wrought by these drugs, the verdict was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. I hope that it acts as a deterrent and sends a message that preying on those who are vulnerable to these influences must end. However, prosecuting in line with the current controls on these products cannot be enough. Stricter regulation or outright bans must be brought forward, and I and my party will continue to lead this fight in every aspect of our representation."@en1
