"It is the 21st century, yet 21 million people are still performing forced labour. They are modern slaves, generating USD 150 billion for the criminal networks that exploit them on an annual basis. This has to end. That is why I voted in favour of this recommendation authorising Member States to open negotiations on the ILO’s 2014 Protocol on the Forced Labour Convention. We need new tools and resources for combating forced labour. But most vital will be coordination amongst Member States. We will only be able to eradicate slavery and stop the exploitation of workers which is undercutting the wages of others, if all EU Member States stand united behind strong measures, so we can finally make slavery history."@en1
