"It is absolutely right that as legislators we take every step possible to stamp out the scourge of forced labour in societies across Europe.
Far too often this Parliament debates issues for which they should have no say and no authority. However crimes such as modern slavery, human trafficking and sexual exploitation are now inextricably linked to free movement and therefore our solutions must too transcend our nation’s borders.
I am proud to be able to say that the regions of the United Kingdom have already brought forward legislation with measures that bring full compliance with the new Protocol to this Convention.
My party colleague, Lord Morrow, has fought with great passion and determination to bring about the Northern Ireland Human Trafficking and Exploitation Act which strengthens this provision and refocuses how we combat these crimes from the victims to those that feed the crime gangs responsible. Europe could learn much from this strategy.
Separate work to tighten the framework has been witnessed in England, Wales and Scotland too. But this is not something that we should simply tick off as a job well done. The gangs that lead these abuses are ever evolving and so too should the solutions aimed at stopping them."@en1
