"I voted in favour of this recommendation for Member States to ratify the 2014 Protocol to the ILO Forced Labour Convention.
The Convention was initially adopted in 1930. However, the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that at least 20.9 million people are victims of forced labour around the world. Almost a century on, forced labour has not been eradicated.
The Protocol of 2014, as an update to the 1930 text, focuses on policies at national level to eradicate forced labour through education and access to information. It also tries to address the root causes of workers’ vulnerability to forced or compulsory labour.
It is an important tool for the defence of human rights as it seeks to tackle modern-day issues as well as protecting the victims of forced labour.
Member States now need to ratify the Protocol by the end of next year."@en1
