"The current humanitarian crisis is unprecedented; the numbers of refugees is increasing daily and is unparalleled in recent times. The complexity of the issue unfortunately gives little hope that the situation will improve in the near future. The Russian intervention is likely to make the issue prolonged and worse in Syria. We have to redouble our efforts to deal with the root causes. Recently, I visited refugee camps in Serbia, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq. People are desperate to get to Europe. During the summer months the influx has surged and new migration routes have emerged, creating even bigger challenges for Europe. For the security of our citizens, as well as incoming refugees, the proper management and control of our external borders is paramount. The burden of this crisis must be shared. Europe must stand together in solidarity and unity committed to its values. I welcome the EU plans to assist the affected countries and also plans to assist the overstretched and underfunded UNHCR and the World Food Programme agencies. These new incentives will not end the crisis, but they are all necessary steps in the right direction."@en1
