"Mr President, this migration crisis has become the biggest political issue of recent times. Accordingly, we must clarify all the factors to ensure that the best solution is found for both EU citizens and the migrants themselves. The problem is further compounded by ambiguous claims made by Saudi Arabian officials at last week’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) meeting, when they suggested that Saudi Arabia is taking in 2.5 million refugees. Matters are not helped by the fact that Saudi Arabia has not signed the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees. According to my maths, this claim does not add up. Bearing in mind the number of people already in both Syria and UNHCR registered camps, my estimates show an unaccounted figure of around 1 to 1.5 million people, many of whom will, of course, already be in further transit to Europe. The Gulf States must rise to the challenge and work with the rest of the world towards a favourable and lasting result. It is therefore essential that all UN members sign up to the 1951 Convention so that we can properly assess the situation."@en1
