"Mr President, many people today have talked about solutions, but we know those are going to be long-term. In the meantime, we have a situation we have to manage. So I welcome the increase in funding for the UNHCR and the World Food Programme, but I think it is really shocking that so many Member States last year cut their support for the World Food Programme, so that we are seeing people in the region concerned living on half a dollar a day.
Those Member States – particularly those that have not been willing to join in the solidarity programme – should hang their heads in shame about the additional suffering they are causing. One has to ask whether those concerned would stay if they were trying to live on that and support their family.
I would also agree with many of those who spoke on Turkey. It is not a safe third country for Kurds and we should be supporting the Kurds in the area of Rojava, and in Turkey itself, because they are part of the solution.
Lastly, I think we have a challenge about putting into operation the decisions taken. If we are talking about rules and are making it clear to people that there are rules, then can we make sure we have staff on the ground and information in relevant languages, and that the asylum process starts at the moment of arrival, not a few days afterwards once people have been spoken to by Frontex and various other organisations."@en1
