"Mr President, one of the roles that eurosceptics play in this Chamber is that we are here to provide a little balance, because if you hear no dissenting voice on an issue then legislation can end up going through on the nod.
In that context, I would like to point out three concerns with regard to geographical indications. First of all, they create barriers for new businesses’ entry into a particular market. If you have a geographical indication – say for example on one type of cheese – it can make it harder for a new business selling cheese to set up in that area.
Secondly, they narrow competition and that means that consumers can often have less choice, rather than more choice. Thirdly, they fix capital within a particular geographical area, which may not always be in the strategic interest of the country concerned, or of the region concerned."@en1
