"A Uachtaráin, go raibh maith agat as ucht an seans a thabhairt dom cúpla focal a rá ar an ábhar tábhachtach seo mar a bhfuilimid ag tabhairt aitheantas don pháirt atá glactha ag údaráis áitiúla, ní hamháin inár dtíortha féin ach go háirithe sna tíortha atá ag forbairt.
Now it was a great Irish-American politician, Tip O’Neill, who said ‘all politics is local’. Certainly that is true, and I suppose local authorities are a prime example of that because they are closest to the people. For that reason it is important that we should work as closely as possible with them.
Particularly now, in the global sense, we are looking for sustainable development goals. In Paris, where I will be representing Parliament, we will be hoping to get a global agreement on climate change. That is going to pose a huge challenge worldwide – and nowhere more so than in Africa where the population is bound to explode over the next number of years.
Combining those targets with feeding a growing population is going to be a challenge, but, by working with local authorities, we may have a better chance than through governments."@en1
