"Mr President, the Commission’s summer Energy Package contains some sensible suggestions that will help the internal market for energy. I was pleased to see the opening of a public consultation on a new market design for the European electricity system and I look forward to its conclusions. I also welcome the Commission’s decision to revert back to the A to G system for energy efficiency labelling. This system is well recognised by consumers and saves them energy and money. I do wonder why it was changed in the first place.
It is, though, important that the EU be consistent in its approach to energy efficiency. The recent European Court of Justice ruling against the United Kingdom’s preferential tax rate for energy-efficient materials runs counter to the Commission’s drive to reduce emissions. Member States should be free to impose lower taxes on energy-efficient products, so I would urge the Commissioner to amend the VAT Directive to allow this to continue."@en1
