"While these temporary relocation plans take cognisance of the ongoing migrant crisis in Southern Europe, there can be no suggestion that they represent a template for solving the root causes of the mass build-up of refugees at EU borders.
While all developed countries have a moral duty to do their fair share to alleviate the plight of those coming to Europe in pursuit of a chance to live in relative safety, I do not believe a Common EU Asylum System is required to remind national leaders of the humanitarian onus on them to act.
In opting out of this relocation mechanism, the UK Prime Minister has since committed to resettling 20,000 Syrian refugees by 2020. The principle of free movement has led to a situation where economic migrants and refugees are often wrongly considered in the same terms. However, this should be no excuse for governments failing to extend a helping hand and safe haven to those in desperate need on the shores of Turkey and Greece.
Most importantly of all is that we in Europe give all necessary focus to supporting peace and stability in the regions from where many of the refugees have been forced to leave in search of a better life for their families."@en1
