"The shocking image of Aylan lying on a beach has brought home the cost of this human tragedy. Earlier this year, I visited refugee camps in Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon and witnessed the unimaginable suffering of refugees first hand. I met a Palestinian family who have struggled for three generations in a refugee camp. It was a heart-breaking indictment of our failure. Refugees are leaving their homes, because they are no longer safe. They are risking life and limb in order to find safe land. We must tackle human traffickers who exploit human misery and we can only do so by creating safe legal channels for refugees. It is wrong that the top 5 countries welcoming refugees are developing countries. It is wrong that the UK offers to take twelve refugees per day whilst Germany takes one thousand. We can only deal with the scale of this crisis by working globally in solidarity. This unfolding human catastrophe tests our very humanity and we must rise up to that challenge."@en1
