"Mr President, no-one – most of all myself – could fail to be moved by a young child dead on a Turkish beach. Members of this House have been tripping over themselves this week with hand-wringing public compassion, but we have to find practical solutions to this problem. By not trying to a halt migration, most of which is economic, we will simply cause more migration and yet more debt. Why are the Gulf States not paying for well-run camps for their fellow Muslims on the Turkish border with Syria, where they could go back to their homes once this present emergency has lapsed? This is forcing people into rubber boats bouncing around in the Mediterranean. It is absolutely atrocious. I care about the human rights of these migrants very much, but I also care about the human rights of my fellow citizens to jobs. We must deal with this and get the Middle East to pay for itself."@en1
