"Mr President, I supported this resolution on migration and refugees in Europe. This is an emergency response to an overwhelming humanitarian disaster. We cannot turn our backs on these desperate asylum seekers and the EU must reach some kind of coherent position. We thought that the financial crisis was a test for Europe and it was, but this current migrant crisis is an even greater test. Can we dig deep and act in common humanity? I commend the proposal from Pope Francis that each parish take in a refugee family and I commend all of those NGOs, ordinary individuals and local authorities who are welcoming the refugees.
But in the medium term, we need to establish safe and legal routes to the EU, and perhaps a blue card, but also we need to return those economic migrants who arrive illegally. Both actions will help to deter the people traffickers. We need to work with UNHCR to support and manage the refugee camps in North Africa, and we need to establish safe zones there also."@en1
