"It will come as no huge shock to those in the chamber that my comments on this report are based around the principle of subsidiarity. It is my view that the European Parliament should have no say on how the UK or any other country in Europe educates its young people or indeed upholds equality in the classroom.
This Parliament has for many years endured efforts to place more women on business boards or other aspects of employment and civil society without care for the principle of merit. Yes, we need more women in decision-making roles, however this should come as a consequence of empowering girls and women through personal development training and traditional means of education, not by simply placing them in spheres of authority to top up statistics.
We must of course ensure that all children have equality opportunities and warrant equal treatment in the classroom, however whether this needs to come in the form of training for teachers and specific slots in school curricula is up for debate."@en1
