"Some may be surprised to learn that many of the first IT programmers during the early 20th century were female. As were trailblazers in medicine and many other fields.
Yet female role models are easily forgotten, and as a result girls remain severely underrepresented in science, maths and technology. Not because of a lack of talent. Because of a lack of the right tools and context.
This is not just these girls' loss. It is ours.
That is why I supported the Rodrigues report and call on the commission to:
widen participation of women in STEM
promote equal representation among education leaders and managers
ask Member States to provide our youngsters gender-sensitive sex and relationships education appropriate for their age
Of course all of this will require governments to reverse austerity policies that have meant severe cuts for the education budget.
I ask them to listen to the words of Malala Yousufzai, Nobel peace prize winner and a student in my region of the West Midlands, who calls on leaders to finally get their priorities straight ... and invest in education."@en1
