"Mr President, this report on empowering girls through education should ring bells with all of us in Parliament. Surely we cannot have forgotten Malala Yousafzai and her inspiring speech on how girls are empowered through education. Knowledge is power, and we live in a knowledge economy. In this report, I supported the proposal that the EU accede to the Istanbul Convention and indeed that Member States ratify the Convention, and also that the EU and Member States work together for gender equality in the EU’s external relations. I am happy to support age-appropriate sex education and relationship education: indeed, I encourage Member States to make such sex education compulsory for secondary and primary school children. I know it is a Member State competence, but that is my view. ‘Age-appropriate’, of course, are the key words here. Most of our young people have access to the internet, to the World Wide Web, with all its pluses and minuses. They need to be armed with age—appropriate sex and relationship education. If not, they are not empowered to deal with what they see and hear."@en1
