"The UK is fast approaching a major skills shortage – by 2022 we shall need an estimated 1.82 million new engineering, science and technology professionals in order to keep up with the world's technology powerhouses of the US, South Korea and Japan and meet consumer demands. Demands for more intelligent and faster mobile technology, the demand for communications technology 24/7, the need for faster travel and the increasing demand for energy all means that we need more men and women to study science at school and university and become scientists. This report deals with a number of the big challenges prohibiting women from entering and reaching senior positions in STEM professions and the UK delegation is pleased to able to support the overall aims this report. We have a number of concerns regarding EU interference in paternity leave, EU common guidelines for universities, gender-balanced budgeting for universities and targets and quotas for women in research bodies and boards. We have voted against these elements and have supported the report overall."@en1
