"While nearly 60% of graduate students in the EU are women, they only account for 1 fifth of senior academics.
These numbers demonstrate the loss of talent that happens along the way, and urgently needs to be reversed. That's why I support the Voezemberg report and why I call for:
more measures to help women reconcile work and family life, like child care parental leave, flexible working.
institutional changes, like the creation of online tools for sharing best practice and increased participation of women in decision-making bodies.
and the application of gender budgeting to all programmes related to science, research and academia.
Sharing knowledge, best practices and resources amongst institutions and member states in the EU will be vital to eliminate gender biases at all stages of recruitment, training and appraisals, and ensure that women and men can balance their work and family lives.
Only that way will we be able to tap the full potential of our talent, instead of just half."@en1
