"I voted in favour of this report, which proposes measures to enable women to progress further in careers in academia and science. While 59% of university graduates in the EU-28 are women, they account for only 18% of university professors. The report calls for implementation of positive measures in order to increase women’s presence at higher levels in academia, science, and the research and technology sector. It urges the European Commission and the Member States to analyse their relevant laws and revise them if necessary in order to enforce equal treatment of women and men. The report states the principle of non-discrimination must be observed in all types of employment contract or funding, and the legal right to equal pay for equal work must be respected. It calls for election and promotion processes to be open and transparent, for the facilitation of better work-life balance and childcare services; and for positive campaigns aimed at girls and women encouraging them to enter academic and research careers in all scientific fields."@en1
