"I voted in favour of this report which contained a number of positive provisions regarding gender equality. This report highlighted that despite positive changes in recent years, gender equality in science and academia has still not been achieved. Women have an extremely low presence in the highest academic and decision-making positions in scientific institutions and universities. While 59 % of university graduates in the EU-28 are women, they account for only 18 % of full university professors. This is unacceptable in a society that is meant to be based on equality and fairness.
I was very disappointed that this report did not contain the amendments put forward by my Group, GUE-NGL, in relation to the Maternity Leave Directive. This is a very important issue and a matter that my party will continue to pro-actively address both in Ireland and at an EU level."@en1
