"Mr President, I voted in favour of this report on women’s careers in science and at university. In particular, I want to refer to the situation in Ireland, where the Equality Tribunal decided in December of last year that, in the case of Micheline Sheehy Skeffington, there was both direct and indirect discrimination against women in the process of promotion to senior lecturer.
This is not the only case of gender discrimination in Irish universities in recent years. In fact, in 2009 only 10% of senior academic posts were held by women and, after Malta, Ireland has the second highest glass-ceiling index for women in higher education.
Yes, there has been a response from the third-level colleges, but it remains uneven. In this context, I welcome this motion and some of the things we called for to address gender imbalances in the decision-making process: gender-based budgeting, the increased participation of women in decision-making, and gender equality plans as a precondition for access to public funding in research, science and academia."@en1
