"I very much welcome the premise of this report: harnessing the skills and meeting the needs of older persons in our society. We all have a role to play to promote a vision in which people’s experience and potential is not lost as we grow older.
In the last parliamentary term, I was delighted that the Commissioner for Inclusion, Marianne Thyssen, agreed to lend her official support to my publication
. This advice guide covered many of the aspects identified in today’s report, including the need to support older people in maximising entitlements, obtaining help when in ill-health, staying safe, tackling elder abuse and getting involved in their local communities, be it through employment, education or volunteering. The response, I am glad to say, has been overwhelming. Raising awareness of services and information available is invaluable.
This report specifically highlights the rising scourge of dementia, which affects approximately 19 000 people in my own constituency, particularly older people, and which demands increased support from Government and the voluntary sector.
It has long been my view that national governments are primarily responsible for leading this fight with direct measures, but raising awareness at all levels is key."@en1
