"I voted in favour of the Kukan report because, with the significant demographic changes we are facing the coming 10-20 years, it is high time Member States set up a more active ageing culture. The EU should fully support this. In this respect, I believe the European Year for active ageing and solidarity between generations in 2012 was a crucial initiative. Now it is key for Member States to support the recruitment of older workers, especially before their statutory retirement age. These people often have invaluable experience and can help coaching new young colleagues. We cannot afford to lose their experience and know-how, especially given the current difficult economic context. I would ask the honourable Members to think about their own future. We have to see ageing as an opportunity, not a burden. Let us take this message home."@en1
