"Mr President, we have had a lengthy debate about the EU labour market, but in my opinion there is no such thing as an EU labour market. We have 28 diverse countries with very different needs. We cannot have a ‘one size fits all’ approach to all those countries. Right-wing economics might work in Germany but if we try to apply that to Greece, as we are doing, then it is doomed to absolute failure and disaster.
We are told that there are 25 million unemployed across Europe but there are two million job vacancies. Why, though, is the assumption made that somehow immigration will solve all of this problem? Jobs may be unfilled for many reasons, and cross-border migration does not necessarily solve that and, of course, in most countries there are more unemployed than jobs available.
I suspect so many in this Chamber are desperate to defend the indefensible that they will claim more immigration is the solution for absolutely everything. Free movement of workers will pass no national test but is welcomed here with a quasi-religious fervour as almost an article of faith."@en1
