"I welcome the underlying desire of this Report to bring together stakeholders from across EU regions to discuss how EU initiatives can benefit urban communities and spaces.
It is part and parcel of the EU that, at times, the nature of our relationship means that those regions that are on the periphery of Europe, both in status, size and population, fail to witness the greatest benefits from proposals brought forward by this Parliament.
In my view, it is therefore crucial that all relevant forums are put in place to ensure that those towns and cities in smaller regions such as my own constituency, Northern Ireland, have their place in influencing EU initiatives.
I am already aware of the work being carried out by the European Unit of Belfast City Council in relation to the Eurocities Network, and I very much support any review that gives local urban populations a greater say in how European funding and other mechanisms can bring benefits to their everyday lives."@en1
