"Mr President, cities are home to nearly 75% of EU citizens. Cities are where two-thirds of our GDP is produced, and where the greatest challenges of our daily life lie too: tackling barriers to employment, social exclusion, pollution and climate change. However, as drivers of economic activity and innovation, cities are also where the solutions to these challenges can be found.
The EU has already done great work on urban and regional development, especially in my region of the West Midlands. Cities like Birmingham, Coventry, Stoke, Worcester and Wolverhampton all have areas where the EU has contributed to their growth. However, we also have to recognise that there is a lack of coordination on urban policies, both horizontally and vertically. That is why I supported Kerstin Westphal’s report and why I am urging the Commission to ensure that towns and cities are much more closely associated with the entire European policy—making cycle and that the urban agenda is fully geared towards the objectives of EU 2020."@en1
