"Madam President, I was pleased to support this report today, which proposes to relocate 40 000 asylum seekers from Italy and Greece to other Member States over the next two years. This is a badly needed emergency response. It is a temporary derogation from existing rules, and only asylum seekers in clear need of international protection will be eligible. I agree with what Vice-President Timmermans said here today: this is a defining moment in European history. And I, like him, am pleased to see the huge response from ordinary people who want to help in whatever way they can. I have received many emails from Irish people offering rooms in their homes, offering houses, offering help in different guises – and it makes me proud to be Irish and to be European when I see the welcoming committees right across the continent.
Finally I commend the proposal from the Pope that every parish should take in an asylum-seeking family, because, in the case of those who do not wish to return, this will help to integrate them into the community."@en1
