"Madam President, this is not just an historic day here in the European Parliament, but also in the UK, as we mark the anniversary of our Queen as the longest—serving reigning monarch. Her first speech as a teenager was to show solidarity with child refugees who had left their homes to escape the dangers of the Second World War. Though the situation of those escaping from Syria, Libya and Iraq today is very different from that of those escaping then, they face the same ordeal of having to flee their homes, often without any parent. There are 3 000 unaccompanied children in the camps in Italy. What is being done to ensure that they are permanently relocated and given positive protection and support? That is why I voted for the Keller report: because it is clear that we need to address the refugee crisis as the European Union as a whole, and we need to do it now."@en1
