"In response to President Juncker’s State of the Union address I want to highlight the need for a radical shift in migration policies across EU countries. We are facing a large scale humanitarian crisis and it must be recognised that the attitudes and policies followed up until now have not worked. I condemn the current crisis and believe that every EU country needs to seriously think about increasing the number of refugees they have committed themselves to take. In addition, I would call upon countries to suspend the Dublin Regulations for those arriving from countries such as Syria, Eritrea and Sudan, where refugees are desperately fleeing war zones. These regulations are simply not practical in the present circumstances and create unnecessary burdens for displaced people genuinely seeking safety. Ireland is a country that understands the pains of these issues having experienced over a century and a half of migration. It is part of our history and part of our personality. Now we must come together to do more and welcome refugees from dangerous and war-torn countries. We as EU Member States have a shared responsibility to prevent human suffering so it is time we start to show a humane and proportionate response."@en1
