"Mr President, I would like to thank the Commissioner for being here tonight, and I would like to thank Mr van de Camp for his efforts in the balancing act that he has performed over recent months to try to get to some form of a compromise position. This will hopefully lead to a successful outcome tomorrow.
The report reflects various areas of transport and emphasises its particular importance in job creation and connecting the outermost regions. Most importantly, consumers of those transport services must be at the centre of all our discussions, namely the travelling passengers and the businesses that depend on our transport infrastructure. We need to keep that to the fore in all our discussions.
On the whole area of aviation, I look forward to the Commission’s package at the end of this year. It is extremely important that we recognise that our carriers are now competing on a global scale, and that needs to be addressed. The world is getting smaller, our businesses and our passengers want to travel to areas outside Europe: to Asia, the US, Australia. Our carriers need to be able to compete and we need to open dialogue, particularly with the Gulf States, that is very important. We need to start that conversation and get to some sort of aviation agreement in that area.
I would like to stress that what is holding back our airlines is that they are uncompetitive on those routes. We need to address the situation."@en1
