"Mr President, in this report the rapporteur proposes the introduction of cable cars as an inexpensive form of urban transport. The Thames Cable Car in the UK cost GBP 60 million to build, with an operational cost of GBP 6 million in the first year. With passenger numbers dropping year by year this is certainly not cost-effective. This report also proposes a review of Directive (EU) 2015/719 on weights and dimensions. I am deeply concerned by this review, especially with respect to Recital 8 of the Directive – which provides for exemptions allowing Member States to impose restrictions for reasons related to road safety or infrastructure characteristics – which could be removed. Yet again, this report champions the Commission’s right to interfere in the sovereignty of Member States by proposing a national road-charging scheme for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. This is a disgrace. It also proposes that the Commission should have more powers to force through the speedy completion of the TEN-T project or, as we call it, HS2. This report is full of contradictions and is unfounded, so I urge you to vote against it."@en1
