"Madam President, I was proud to hold a European Year event in Bedford, in my constituency, with Britain’s Age UK, about the importance of staying warm, and to take part in exercise programmes called ‘Fit as a fiddle’ in Luton and in Ipswich. I congratulate all involved. But is not the real ‘fiddle’ the claim that we believe in inter-generational solidarity when, in fact, that solidarity is tragically breaking down? How can British pensioners heat their homes when two million of them – paid the lowest pensions as a proportion of GDP of all European countries except Latvia – live in poverty, and when the pre-election promise to cap their social care costs has been cruelly broken less than three months on? Sadly, British pensioners are simply some of the worst victims of cuts in welfare levels, which the Commission Report on Ageing says will decline Europe-wide by a further 2% this year. That Greek pensioner who collapsed on the floor because he could not collect his pension is symbolic of how older people are being treated across our continent. We should think twice before telling them to stay active. Let us start by telling them how they are supposed to survive."@en1
