"As the first European Citizens’ Initiative to reach the target of more than 1 million signatures, the Right2Water initiative represents an important milestone in the history of not only the ECI but also the European project. It promoted participatory democracy in the EU and allowed its citizens to engage in European debate in a tangible and practical way.
The widespread public support for the initiative shows what an important issue the human right to water and sanitation is – and, looking ahead, this must be properly reflected across all relevant EU policy areas. I am pleased to say that I voted in favour of making access to affordable, universal and safe water a human right.
We are sending a strong message to the Commission that we want the exclusion of water and sanitation from ‘market rules’ and that the Framework Directive for Water is the right legal tool to ensure that water and sanitation are covered by EU legislation and included in the Charter of Fundamental Rights."@en1
