"The EU dedicates a quarter of its global humanitarian funding to water, hygiene and sanitation. This is laudable, but not enough. 750 million people in the world still do not have access to safe drinking water. This kills more children than AIDS, malaria and smallpox combined. It is a situation that 1.6 million engaged European citizens could not accept. That is why they launched their own initiative to ask the European Commission to do better, and I join their voices in doing so. I voted in favour of the Boylan report, because I want to join them in calling for efficient and decisive action to ensure that all people enjoy the right to water and sanitation, that water supply and management are not subject to internal market rules and that water services are excluded from liberalisation. Water should be the turf of life, not the turf of profit. I urge the Commission not to fail 1.6 million EU citizens who are counting on it to make this a reality."@en1
