"Mr President, we must look upon the Blue Economy as an asset, providing incredible opportunities for tourism, energy and food, and new applications for therapeutics and technology. It can create jobs, drive investment, innovation and growth, and I welcome any opportunity that we have to discuss this untapped potential of our Blue Economy. In Ireland at present we are experiencing a significant Blue Growth, with a 9% increase in marine sector growth over the last five years, and the ocean economy is now valued at 1.3% of GDP. In July, a conference was held on harnessing our ocean wealth which Commissioner Vella attended, and I know he is really keen to promote and to support any developments in the Blue Economy area. At that conference we heard from experts that Ireland could create up to 29 000 jobs and contribute an additional EUR 2.7 billion in growth from our Blue Economy by 2020. It is an extremely important untapped potential, and any report that focuses on it and its value is to be welcomed."@en1
