"More than 60% of all enterprises in the European Union are family-run, and they account for about 40-50% of jobs in the private sector. Family businesses moreover take a longer-term view than non-owner-run businesses given they want to ensure that the success continues in following generations. But despite the importance of these businesses for our economy, they are faced with many challenges: many do not meet the criteria to be considered an SME, meaning that a lot of potential funding is lost, or try to remain below the threshold by limiting recruitment. Many also struggle with ensuring succession at the top, causing 150 000 closures each year at the cost of 600 000 jobs. That is why I supported the Niebler report, which calls for Member States to collect more data and promote exchanges of best practices. That way we can create the right framework on issues like corporate taxation and national taxation on inheritance and gifts so we can offer robust support to these vital motors of our economy."@en1
