"Mr President, I was happy to support this report and the spotlight it puts on family businesses across Europe. They form the backbone of our economy, and there is still no clear definition of them, so it does make it difficult to implement necessary legislation. Sixty percent of all enterprises in the EU are family-run and they account for 40-50% of our jobs in the private sector. They generally take a long—term view, because they are owner-owned rather than non-owner owned and so they have an eye on the future and on ensuring that the business passes on to future generations. One of the single biggest issues and questions facing family businesses is that of succession and passing on the business: 450 000 companies each year, employing 2 million people, find themselves in this position and, because of many difficulties, it is estimated that 150 000 businesses are forced to close because of the difficulty in passing on the business. We need to create the right framework, we need to recognize that they are important and we need to do more work in this area, but I compliment the rapporteur Mrs Niebler on producing the report because it is very valuable in highlighting the effect of family businesses."@en1
