"I voted in favour of the report which underlines that the surveillance of communications interferes with the rights to privacy and expression, if conducted outside an adequate legal framework. It requests that the Commission ensures coherence between the EU’s external actions and its internal policies related to technology and to promote the democratic oversight of security and intelligence services in its political dialogue with third countries. The report also notes that security measures, including counter-terrorism measures, are increasingly used as pretext for violations of the right of the privacy and for clamping down on the legitimate activities of human rights defenders, journalists and political activists; a point that Labour MEPs have made in relation to the case of Raif Badawi."@en1
