"I support calls for more flexibility in the hearings of Vice-Presidents with cross-cutting portfolios in order to allow for wider scrutiny from all relevant parliamentary committees. Calls for the re-introduction of follow up questions is also a positive contribution as it should allow MEPs to pursue more inquisitive questioning. However, while greater gender balance in the make-up of the college of commissioners is of course desirable, I do not support calls for Member States to be required to nominate both a male and female commission candidate – with the President designate then deciding which candidates to approve for the final make up the college. Notwithstanding that the key criteria for evaluating prospective candidates must be competence to fulfil their duties, it is a Member State right to select the candidate of its choosing and therefore I do not support any further erosion of sovereignty in this area. Alongside my conservative colleagues, I also do not support calls for further substantive analysis of Commissioner designates’ financial interests – this would go far beyond Parliament's competences as established under the treaties. It is for this reason that I voted against."@en1
