"Mr President, it pains me to see that, in a union that was born out of the firm will to stand up for democracy and human rights after the Second World War, today we find ourselves treading on the rights of those who are fleeing wars instead. It pains me to see that one third of the petitions from citizens received by Parliament relate to breaches of fundamental rights. It angers me to learn that many of these revolve around unemployment, precarious work practices and inequality in many of the Member States.
That is why I supported the Ferreira report, and I would urge the Commission to adopt an internal strategy and action plan on fundamental rights, put in place an EU mechanism to monitor democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights in Member States and, vitally, carry out an urgent assessment of the impact of austerity measures on fundamental rights. It is crucial that Member States pull together and allow the EU to carry out the role it was created for, namely tackling these injustices."@en1
