"The EU banned trade in seal products in 2009 as the result of animal welfare concerns. Labour MEPs voted for this report to strengthen the 2009 ban, aligning it with World Trade Organisation (WTO) standards by removing exemptions for small-scale hunts. Since the existing EU ban came into force in 2009, two million seals have been saved from being clubbed to death or shot and left to bleed to death. Millions more seals will continue to be saved from this gruesome practice by a reinforced EU ban. The only way a ban can work is through cooperation and international action, and on issues like this the EU has led the way, reflecting EU citizens’ concerns for animal rights."@en1
