"The background to this resolution is concerned with an EU-ban in 2009 on trade in seal products (mainly fur) which was adopted.
Two exceptions under which seal products can still be imported have come back into play since then. These exceptions have been challenged by the World Trade Organization and so the Commission had to come with a new proposal to adjust the ban on seal products.
There are a number of reasons to impose a ban on the killing of seals including public concerns about the animal welfare aspects of the killing of seals and the possible presence on the market of products obtained from animals killed in a way that causes excessive pain, distress, fear and other forms of suffering. It was for these reasons that I voted in favour of this resolution"@en1
