"Mr President, since the EU ban on the trade in seal products in 2009, more than two million seals have been saved from being clubbed or shot and left to bleed to death, but an unnecessary exemption on small-scale hunts has meant that too many seals have still suffered a horrible death without any reason. That is why I voted in favour of the Buşoi report on trade in seal products: so that the EU can help bring an end to this. I applaud the swift negotiations that took place on this issue between the Council, Parliament and the Commission. It shows that when we pull in the same direction the EU can take swift action to uphold the values that matter to our citizens and encourage our national governments and Commission to demonstrate this, the same positivity and decisive action, in many other fields of importance – especially in animal welfare."@en1
