"I was very pleased to support this resolution for the ratification of the Protocol of 2014 to the ILO Forced Labour Convention, 1930. This is an important update to the existing Convention which seeks to tackle forced or compulsory labour in all its guises in the modern world. It is estimated that over 20 million people are victims of forced labour globally and it is always vulnerable groups such as women, children and migrants that suffer. In the context of the ongoing refugee crisis I particularly welcome its call to protect persons, particularly migrant workers, from possible abusive and fraudulent practices during the recruitment and placement process and to ensure all victims of forced or compulsory labour, irrespective of their presence or legal status in the national territory, have access to appropriate and effective remedies, such as compensation."@en1
